Mark Patten

Marais MN, passed away  March  16,  2019 at the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, MN after a battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

He was born March 11, 1952 to Leland Tobias Patten and Kathryn Sylvia (Dewar) Patten in Worthington, MN. He graduated from Robbinsdale High School in 1970. He married Nancy Elizabeth Barr on May 26th, 1972 at Okontoe Camp, Grand Marais, MN. Together they had 4 children. Mark was an avid outdoors man and loved adventure and camp life. He attended Pinehaven Christian Camp as a young man, worked at hunting camps in Alaska, Wyoming and Montana, helped start Adventurous Christians in the early 1970's, and was the director of Okontoe Fellowship for 33 years. He was passionate about sharing the love and redemption of the Gospel message with everyone he met. He helped organize mission outreaches to Native communities· in Ontario and Manitoba, which included Bible camps, hockey outreaches and training/sending missionaries. His love for worship fortified the faith of many and honored his Savior as he led church services, outreaches, youth/sports/ and mission training camps. His fun-loving personality won the hearts of many as he taught the Word of God from his home, in the Okontoe chapel, around the campfire, and across a picnic table. Many camp participants will recall him teaching them how to paddle a canoe, how to light a fire, to use a compass, or the muddy mess of his signature "swamp walks". Mark started a chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Cook County and volunteered as a football/weight lifting coach for many years. He enjoyed dog mushing for 21 years, during which time he and his dogs were privileged to participate in the filming of the Walt Disney movie,"Iron Will" (1993). He loved working with Okontoe's Belgian horses and the sleigh ride business he and his family ran for over 21 years. Out of his love for God he passionately shared his faith in Christ with anyone he could, discipling and caring for all who came into his life, whether it be on a canoe trip, behind a team of dogs, across a hockey rink or football field, or simply on his porch swing. He truly encompassed the verse from Colossians 3:17 - "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."

Preceded in death by his parents, Leland and Kathryn. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, his children Christin (Peter) Jacobson, Andrea (Tim) Bermel, Jacob (Andrea) Patten, Benjamin (Elizabeth) Patten. Grandchildren - Tate, Cayle, Nolan, Isaiah, Annelise, Micah, Nathan, Jace, Madelaine, Isaac, Olivia and Andrea, brother John (Ahne) Patten, sister Lynn Vigesaa, and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, and countless "extended family members".

Gregory Zaffke

Submitted by Tom Gibson, RHS ’69

Gregory Bruce Zaffke was my neighbor and best friend growing up in Crystal. We played games indoors and out. Once Greg got the idea to cover the side of his house with grape jelly, and we had fun doing so (not so much fun when his mom discovered it). As he got older Greg loved playing baseball, hockey, and all sports. Greg and his wife, Anita, moved to Lake Zurich, Illinois, when Greg’s employer, Wickes Furniture, reassigned him to the Chicago area. Greg and Anita were well known and loved in Lake Zurich and beyond.

Greg was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anita; his parents, Dudley and Donna Zaffke, and his older sisters, Cheryl Zaffke and Robin Lachmansingh. He is survived by his nephew, Travis Lachmansingh, son, Gregory Bruce Zaffke II (or “GBZ2,” as he was fondly nicknamed), daughter-in-law Heidi Bennett, and their five children.

A motorcycle enthusiast, Anita was rear-ended and killed on her motorcycle in 2009 by a driver who was painting her nails while behind the wheel. On the one-year anniversary of Anita’s death, Greg founded the Black Nail Brigade and sponsored a Memorial/Awareness Motorcycle Ride in Lake Zurich. The rally was held not only in memory of Anita and others who have died in motor vehicle or motorcycle accidents, but also to promote mindful driving. Later, Greg Jr. and his dad folded the Black Nail Brigade into the nonprofit Crash Coalition. Its mission is to increase motorists’ awareness of the pandemic of distracted driving and to emphasize the reality of the death and destruction it causes.

Greg occasionally returned to the Twin Cities for a mini-reunion with mutual friends and neighbors Steve Bros and Jim Erickson and Jim’s dad, Roger. I last saw Greg at my home in Plymouth in the late 1990s, when we gathered for a round of cribbage, one of Greg’s favorite games. At that time, he still bore black polish on one of his fingernails to carry Anita’s memory. While Greg very much enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, he never quite recovered from Anita’s horrific death, and he left us too soon at the age of 63. A memorial gathering was later held in Minneapolis in Greg’s honor, attended by many friends and family members. I still miss my friend.

Born to Wallace and Margaret Ostman on October 9, 1952, Kristofer is survived by his wife Margaret (Branstad), and children Nathaniel (Heidi Fournier), Kirsten (Paul Fenner), and Benjamin; three brothers, Steve (Jodi), Tim (Mary) and Peter (Emy), one sister, Sue, and predeceased by his parents and brother Randall. Kris leaves four grandchildren, Taylor, Zach, Brooklyn and Brittany, inlaws, nieces and nephews, and many friends.

After graduating from Robbinsdale High School, Kris was trained in mechanical drafting at Anoka Technical Institute and went on to work for 35 years at Federal Cartridge Corp., most recently as a new product engineer. During retirement he spoke often about the many friends and good times with co-workers both on the job and off.

Kris was witty with a quick sense of humor but serious about taking on any tasks or projects needing fixing and sparing no detail to solve a problem correctly. He woke up eager to start the day and motivated to get things accomplished. He had many interests over the years including hunting, bicycling, wood working, playing cards, and maintaining his home and property.

Kris had a strong sense of responsibility for his family and those around him.

Kris and Margaret lived a true love story meeting in 9th grade at Robbinsdale Junior High, marrying at age 20 and enjoying the blessings of that union by the grace of God for almost 47 years.

There will be a memorial service at Grace Lutheran Church, Vero Beach, FL, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2020. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Elk River Minnesota. Richard Gwynn

Richard Sterling “Rick” Gwynn, 68, died peacefully at his home in White Bear Lake on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, after a long and valiant battle with liver disease.

Born in Minot, ND, on March 11, 1952, Rick was the beloved son of Joy and Ric Gwynn, and the brother of Kay Johnson, (Milt), Pat Dufrene, (Irvin), and David Gwynn, (Michelle) as well as nieces, nephews and close family friends.

Rick had a long and illustrious career at the VFW Post 1782 in White Bear Lake.  He loved doing  service to veterans and was dedicated to the VFW.

He was generous with this time and talents, serving as the  Commander of VFW Post 1782 from 2016-2018.

Rick loved animals, fishing, making wine, and seeing joy on the faces of military kids when he played Santa Claus at their Christmas parties.   Two of his most prized possessions were the fish he caught and had stuffed and mounted, a 27 pound Northern he caught in Canada, and a Bull Red fish he caught in Louisiana with his friend, Lloyd.  If you were in his living room, you were directed to look above his fireplace while he told you all about them.

Rick’s love of dogs was immense and it was rare that he didn’t have at least one dog and sometimes more, he had more than enough love for all of them.  Cats on other hand….he said he really didn’t “like”, but ultimately a sweet little guy he named Tux, stole his heart, and changed his mind about felines.

Rick was most in his element playing Santa to military kids, a tradition that started while he was in the Navy and stationed in Japan. It continued even after he was a civilian and he played Santa to military kids here.  He never charged anyone for his services as the Man in Red.  It might have been his favorite “gig”.

He was a leader and organizer, an animal lover, storyteller, fisherman, complete with lies and stories, wine maker, but he was most proud of being a military veteran.

From Rick served as commander of VFW Post 1782 White Bear Lake, State of Minnesota from 2016 to 2018. He was currently Senior Vice Commander of the 4th District VFW. During Rick’s tenure as Commander he developed and planned a Monument Honoring our Veterans and War Dead in White Bear Lakes Veterans park on the shores of White Bear Lake. In addition to the monument he researched and arranged for a brick pathway, with bricks honoring, by name, Veterans of all Branches.

Rick researched and acquired from the US Army, M1 rifles to be used exclusively for Veterans funerals, in addition enough ammunition to honor Veterans far into the future.

Each Christmas Rick would play Santa for the National Guard and Army reserve units at their annual Christmas parties. Family days at these Army units would find Rick cooking hundreds of hamburgers, and enjoying every minute of it.

Janice Nystrom Skjolsvik

Sorry to share the news that Jan Nystrom Skjolsvik passed away from metastatic breast cancer. Jan and I knew each other from our Robbinsdale connections but became good friends when we both landed in the Old Shoemaker dorm at St. Cloud State our freshman year. She met her husband, Mark, at Montgomery Wards in Robbinsdale and they were married just days short of 46 years. To summarize his tribute he wrote, "Jan gave her all to everything she did...to being a mom of their daughter and son...to being a Grandma to five grandchildren who became the essence and purpose of her life..to the children she taught in Special Education in Maplewood/North St. Paul...to protecting their lake's quality (Fifty Lakes, MN) and the quality of the lakes in our township...to Retrouvaille, a peer ministry for troubled marriages." Her family enjoys hearing from those who have memories of Jan. Rest in peace, dear friend. Written by Mary Santelman

Cheryl McLaughlin Glaessner

photoCheryl McLaughlin Glaessner, age 67, died on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 in Washington, DC. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on March 11, 1952. An adventurous, energetic spirit from a very young age, Cheryl grew up loving a variety of animals, especially horses, cats and dogs. She received her B.A. in social work from Colorado State University (1974), her M.A. in counseling from the American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts (1976), and her Ed.D in teaching and administration from Virginia Tech (1987). For 11 years, Cheryl was director of the Human Services Degree Program at Northern Virginia Community College, where she also enjoyed a long successful teaching career. Cheryl loved teaching grade school age students how to read and eventually transitioned to a career as a reading specialist. This enabled her to meet individually with students in many D.C. area schools, as well as from her home, where she worked as a private tutor. In her community of Carderock Springs in Bethesda, Maryland, Cheryl was known for her yearly "Trick or Treat for UNICEF" drive during Halloween, as well as numerous other pursuits she took on to help those in need. She was a great listener, a person who made her friends and neighbors feel valued and important, and a passionate owner of many poodles, including Fudge, Maudie, Reecie, Mosley and Babette. For a tiny woman, she was also known for having a ton of spunk. She was always ready to speak her mind and to fiercely protect those that she loved and cared about. Cheryl will be forever remembered by her soulmate, Tom Glaessner, husband of 37 years; her two beloved children, Max and Sonya Glaessner, and their spouses, Katy Sherry and Bobby Maher. Close relatives include her brother Mike McLaughlin, his wife Candy, mother-in-law Elisabeth Glaessner, in-laws Phil Glaessner and wife, Ellen, Barbara Glaessner and husband Giles, Tina Glaessner, and nieces and nephews too numerous to name, all of whom loved her immensely. A celebration of Cheryl's life is being planned by the family for a later date. Lynn Torline Germscheid

R.I.P.  Lynn Torline Germscheid      Written by Anthony Tollin

I recently learned the sad news (from her husband) that our classmate

Lynn Torline Germscheid died two years ago on March 15,2020,

a cancer casualty.  I first met Lynn at Northport in fifth grade, shortly

after her family moved from Grand Forks to Brooklyn Center.  She lived

two blocks away from me at the far end of the Robbinsdale School District,

so we regularly rode the same school bus to grade school and then to

junior and senior high school.  Due to our last names being similar, we

regularly sat next to each other in grade school and in our junior and

senior high homerooms, and our lockers were usually adjacent.  Lynn

and I became even closer friends in college since she was the best friend

of my college fiancee and we were all active in the Minnesota Science

Fiction Society (with Lynn editing its awarding-winning newsletter).

Lynn and I stayed in contact for the next few decades, and often got

together for a meal when I made return visits to Minneapolis.  Lynn

developed a standout career in computers, jetting across the country as

a trouble-shooter and later as a high-profile teacher in the tech field.

Brad Schultz

“B.Roy”Bradley-Shultz-Obituary

Our beloved Brad peacefully left the stage for a bigger and better stage on Wednesday, January 5th, due to complications resulting from cancer at the age of 69.

Brad was well known in the Twin Cities music community as the quintessential Rock ‘n’ Roll drummer in a career that spanned over 5 decades and featured bands such as The Canterbury Tales, Orange %, Spice, Volcano, Trick, Fragile, The Brothers Foolish, Bulldogs, Cain and most recently, Jiggs Lee Invasion. Brad’s love for Rock ‘n’ Roll was sealed after seeing The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 and following a brief stint on bass guitar, moved to drums and established himself as one of the premier drummers in the Twin Cities who mastered the nuanced approach of Ringo Star, the power of Ian Paice (his two favorite drummers), and everything in-between.

All who were lucky enough to know Brad will remember him fondly as quite the character in every positive sense of the phrase. He was quick witted, thoughtful, insightful and always willing to help. He was also a great raconteur and conversationalist in a wide variety of topics including music, literature, history, politics, proper English grammar and all things British, especially motorcycles like his treasured 1975 Norton Commando.

All who were lucky enough to see Brad perform will remember an extraordinary drummer who was always at the top of his game, including his last show on Nov. 27, 2021. They will also remember his frequent loud and humorous banter between songs, often peppered with “colorful” language in his own inimitable way.

In 1994, Brad met up with an old acquaintance, Karen Mohn who became the love of his life. It was at this time that Brad, who was not a cat lover, became one with the help of Karen’s cherished cat, Freya, and from that point on he knew he was “doomed”. Brad and Karen had 28 wonderful years together where they enjoyed spending time coming up with creative solutions to home projects, working on their MG sports cars in their unbelievable garage, looking forward to “date night” every Friday (when there wasn’t a gig), and most of all, always being there for each other with mutual respect, kindness and love.

Brad was truly one of a kind - a great partner, a great mate, incredibly cool, always entertaining and a uniquely talented individual. He will be dearly missed.

B.Roy, you exited this gig too early. Some songs will remain unsung without the strong backbeat you brought to our music and our lives.

Brad was preceded in death by parents LeRoy and Imogene Shultz. Survived by his long time-partner of 28 years Karen Mohn, brother Jeff (Jennifer) of Youngstown, OH, nephews Nick (April) Shultz of St. Michael and Clay (Nikki) Shultz of Bloomington. A celebration of Brad’s life will be announced at a later date.
